Rant
I wanted to do a nice happy fluffy post today since it's Friday, but I'm so irritated right now. I can't think of anything happy to blog about.
The reason I am pissed is because it's payday and my check was less than I thought it would be. I worked 12 hours of overtime, but I only got paid for 4 hours of overtime. I got 95 hours of regular pay. How does that make any sense? It might be an oversight. I don't think so though. I've seen the way this company deals with money issues and I just think they are cheap. The payroll person just happens to be the owner's wife - figures.
I've been coming in on Saturdays for a while now and I was under the impression that I was going to get overtime. It's not worth my time to come in on Saturday and get regular pay. I'd rather have the time off to relax. As it is now I work 9 hour days and only get paid for 8 because I'm not interested in taking an hour lunch. I feel like I live here.
Anyway, enough about work. At least it's Friday. I pretty much have every hour of my weekend filled up. I'm most looking forward to laying by the Red Rock pool on Sunday. They have a beautiful pool area. I think it's going to be 85 degrees outside on Sunday so that'll be nice. I haven't been to the mall in a month. I'm really trying to stay away but it's hard sometimes.
Part of me is so tempted to go back to waiting tables. Money is so much more plentiful when you are waiting tables. Working in this office is driving me nuts. UGH!
Okay, sorry about the rant guys - have a good weekend.

I know what you mean about wanting to go back to working for tips. I prefer cocktailing to serving food, though. There's nothing like getting tossed a black chip ($100) for a single cup of coffee! I miss the casino biz so much sometimes and I may decide to go back, still, whether my husband wants me to or not! LOL
Also, it's hard to go from having money everyday to waiting on a weekly or bi-weekly paycheck. That part really sucks!

"The payroll person just happens to be the owner's wife - figures."

Having waited tables I understand your desire to go back to it - especially since you're frustrated. I hope the rest of your day is beter and that you have a great weekend!

If you signed a contract to work for them, I'd get yourself a copy. They need to have what constitutes overtime in writing. If they don't, they might be legally screwed. Also, check and see if there's any state or local laws about overtime wages. Knowledge is power.

I hope you end up having a great weekend. You need it after getting crapped on by payroll. That sucks.

Document your hours and pay. Also check to see what the company OT policy is. If they are not paying you OT when they should be you should take it up with them and get what you are owed.
And, if they are not following the law on overtime pay the gov't will F***K them up over it. I know cause I have a former employer from when I was in college who ended up in the pokey after screwing over his employees (and the IRS).

The restaurant business may offer better tips but is it worth it? I did my time there and I'm not going back. I sleep better at night now.

For sure check the company handbook for their OT policy. I know many have said it but it is your first step. I’ve worked for places that pay OT for anything over 40 hours a week and those that have various other policies. Then have a talk with the boss.
The lure of daily tips is strong in Vegas. One of the reasons I moved back to Portland was because I just didn't want to work full time in a casino. Yes, even in a poker room. I knew if I was living there, that was where I would make the $.
I also grew tried of the travel and expenses on the circuit. Not to mention the $ was getting smaller as people stopped leaving tips after winning a major tournament.
Did you know the ENTIRE final table did not leave an after tip at the main event of the WSOP last year? It didn't change my $, because floor people were not part of the tip pool (that is a different rant though). But it is becoming the norm. Yes, I know Harrah's took a ridiculous rake at the WSOP. But remember that 2% (for staff) was split by 400-500 dealers. When you are dealing that tip is your life, $5.25 an hr just does not pay the bills. *** end of rant ***
