Coincidence?
So, I just thought I'd mention something about the fires burning in California. What a tragedy. I feel so sad for all of the families that lost their homes, people without jobs, businesses and lives that were destroyed. There is really nothing I can say that would do any justice to this topic, but just know that we are thinking of you.
So, I dunno, is it me or has there been a lot of devastation and tragedy recently? For instance, we had the 911 incident, which obviously wasn't something that nature did, it was a tragedy created by humans, but nonetheless, it was a tragedy.
We had the tsunami which killed a lot of people.
There was Hurricane Katrina which destroyed a lot of lives and homes and basically obliterated a bunch of cities. We are still rebuilding new orleans. I actually lived in Florida during that time. There were a lot of hurricanes that you didn't hear much about, but let me just say, I lived in Delray Beach for two years and I witnessed more than 6 hurricanes in that short amount of time. The last one I was there for was Wilma, we lost power for 13 days during that one! And the funny thing was that all of the people that lived in that area for a long time kept telling me how unusual all of these back to back hurricanes were, but honestly, I had to get out. I couldn't deal with all of those hurricanes and they weren't showing any signs of stopping.
Now we have the wildfires, what the hell????? Is all of this a coincidence? Is there a higer power at work creating all of this havoc??? Is someone trying to tell us something?
I'm really curious as to what you guys think about this topic. I honestly thought it was just a coincidental thing until I talked to my mom tonight and she had some other ideas on the subject!

I blame the Karl Rove weather machine for the tsunamis and the hurricanes.
Otherwise, it's the begining of rapture. I expect it to start raining frogs soon.

It's mostly an overactive press. For instance, the problem of child abductions is so bad now that parents have to make sure their kids are watched at all times (unlike when I grew up). But the reality is that child abductions are way down from 10 and 20 years ago and abductions by strangers is down even more. (http://www.stats.org/stories/2002/phony_aug01_02.htm for instance).
Why don't we hear more about this? Because it's not in anybody's interest. It is not in the interest of the store that wants you to come out to get your kid tagged (maybe you'll buy something while you are there) and it is not in the interest of law enforcement that wants a bigger budget and more cops, etc.
We have many more news channels now and they need sensational stories to attract watchers. So now, everything that happens on video is a story, and if it bleeds, it leads.
Some funky things are happening, and Pauly may be right about the Rapture, but until report of missing children AND adult goes way up, I'm keeping my reservation for Vegas. See you there.

Special k is right on the money. These tragedies aren’t happening more there just being reported more.
The hype to tell a tragic story by the media is amazing. Right now in Texas where it's always dry and hot the biggest thing on TV is the cal. fires so guess what, all the local news are doing exposes on how our terrain is like cal. and conditions are right for our state to burn.
I never take any of it to seriously. West Nile virus like 10 people a year die and it's an epidemic, remember all the hype on bird flue, what happened?

I agree that it's mostly the 24 hour news cycle and the big media hype machine. There are fires in Cali every year. There are hurricanes and tornadoes and earthquakes and on and on. Mother nature is just temperamental.

Time to start reading the book of Revalations! ;)

A lot of the things happening in California are either weather related and/or human related.. Same with New Orleans..
How long can we ignore nature and not have it smack us back somewhat? A planets cycles are just that.. years and years ago we went into an ice age.. perhaps we are moving into some different weather patterns with more intense storms?
Who knows....

The endless ebb and flow of weather - cold then hot and vice versa. Pretty simple.

I actually have been thinking the same thing. There is a heck of a lot of bad stuff going on recently! But I agree that we just have more access to the press these days than we ever had before.
Or maybe it is a cyclical adjustment in the universe. It is scary nontheless.

I agree with the press comments. When you compare the death toll of today with some of the events in the past like The Black Death that wiped out a significan portion of the European population these events are just blips on the historical radar. Sucky blips if it affects you, but global percentage wise, these events are nothing. Of course while I'm sitting on the prospect of water rationing, I'm starting to wonder where the "best" place to live would be.

All I know is that it's been nearly twenty years since we've had an earthquake worth talking about and really? It's about time the gene pool around my neck of the woods was culled a tad. ;)
But actually, who knows? I think Dr. Pauly probably has the best theory. It definitely has to be the Karl Rove weather machine.

Well, you only mentioned three disasters in this country in 6 years. 911 was man made. Katrina was exacerbated by the levee problem, and the wildfires were apparently arson.
The tsunami was foreign and there's foreign earthquakes and volcano eruptions that happen all the time but only make one news cycle.
I don't think there's been any more tragedy than normal, just more pattern mapping.
October 25, 2007
Special K is right about the media making it seem worse than it is for a large amount of this.
The unprepardness of local authorities and the federal government to handle these emergencies is also a big cause. If they'd listened and rebuilt/reinforced the levies in New Orleans, then the damage would have been lessened. Ditto the current wildfires in Cali re: prepardness.
As for the increase in hurricanes and other extreme weather - climate change is a contributing factor. That said, after the worst hurricane season on record, it was relatively tame one the next year.

I blame the lack of chocolate chips on my cookie last night.
God should see it fit there are X amount of chip units on my cookie to prevent the next tornado.

Living in San Diego, I can't even watch the TV because it's disgusting how the news tries to make it more dramatic. It's good to have coverage but when they send in news casters from out of state to report (so the regular ones can sleep) and they are excited about it, it's kinda sickening.
October 25, 2007
Carmen,
Watch "An Inconvenient Truth," the global warming documentary that Al Gore was involved with. I found it fascinating myself.
"Build not your castle upon the sand..." ... I find it hard to believe that I'm the only one that would reconsider rebuilding New Orleans. "Fool me once,..."
October 25, 2007
I agree with most of these comments, the world has always been full of natural disasters and what is happening is nothing 'new'..it's just that with the news hyping things up and reporting in great depth on each of these tradegies we get a sense of it being out of proportion.
I try and stay calm and just take the media reports with a grain of salt, all their terrifying doomsday predictions etc.
I am reading about the California fires right now actually and I'm shocked at how scary it must be. Poor things - to loose everything.
October 25, 2007
population growth, 24/7 realtime news reporting, seasonal weather cycles, etc etc etc... makes for sensationalism, not coincidence.
October 26, 2007
I think we have a little bit of mother nature to blame and alot of society to blame.
it would be a better world and we could handle things that come our way if only we could all treat each other a little nicer.
October 26, 2007
All I want to say is that I appreciate that you brought this up and I've really enjoyed reading the responses of your fans, who may or may not have weighed in based in part on the size of your tatas, but that's neither here nor there. Bottom line, nice post. Namaste.

It is because I get so far behind in my blog reading I miss the pleas for things to be better until it is too late. I am sorry, I will try to do better.
