Sunday Stuff

So, this weekend has been really good. I immersed myself in N.A. because I haven't been feeling well, I've been battling depression among other things and I knew that something had to change. So, Friday night I went to my regular meeting, we all went out to eat dinner afterwards and then from there we headed to our friend Jason's house, about 7 people stayed downstairs and played that game Rock Band - is anyone familiar with that game? It's some sort of video game, maybe on the WII - not sure, and they entertained us for many hours as they sang song after song and us hardcore card players went up to the card room and played 3 very long games of spades.

Spades is a card game played by 4 people in teams of 2. The goal is to anticipate how many books you and your parnter can get, bid your hand properly, play out the game and the first team to get to 500 points wins. It can be a very intense game and people take it very seriously. I learned to play back when I was like 18 years old and I learned from people who used to play in prison. I can't tell you how many fights I've seen break out over a game of spades. I remember one time in particular playing with my friend Eric - he had a nervous tick and he used to blink a lot. Well, the guys we were playing with didn't know that that he couldn't control his blinking, and they accused him of giving signals across the table with his eyes - so literally, a huge fight broke out, the table was over turned, a chair went through a sliding glass door, the place was trashed, people were hurt, the police were called and we skipped out of there FAST!

Anyway, we played spades Friday night til about 4 in the morning and it was a blast.

Saturday during the day my sponsor had all of us sponsees over to her house, we had a very long and emotional and intense meeting for 4 hours. One of the girls that she sponsors is on house arrest because she was driving in a blackout, someone ran out in front of her and she killed him. He wasn't in a crosswalk and his intoxication level was .24, but he died and she didn't even know she hit someone and left the scene of the accident. So, she has to live with that for the rest of her life and right now she's awaiting trial. Another girl in our group stabbed her husband while she was high on drugs, he was coming after her, he was abusive, he had the knife and somehow she ended up stabbing him, she was on the run for months, she was stripping to make money, she was doing amateur porn and then she finally turned herself in, went to trial and somehow managed to get probation. This was like 3 years ago, she turned her life around, got married had a baby and then last year when she was pregnant, her mom went into a blind rage, took a bunch of drugs, blacked out and killed her baby sister. Crazy shit. These girls have some serious serious demons they are battling with and it makes my piddly stuff look kind of unimportant and it puts things in perspective.

At any rate, after that meeting, I went to a regular meeting with my friends, we went out to dinner at Red Robin where I had a fantastic creamsicle milkshake - I'm a big fan of whip cream and then, me and my new man branched off and went to the movies.

New man? Yes, there's a new man and he's very cute, super sweet, he doesn't drink or do drugs, he has a job and unlike the loser from last week, he doesn't have a bunch of girls calling his phone, he isn't a drama queen and so far so good.

So, we went to see Cloverfield - I loved it!!!!! It's one of those flicks that you either love or hate, the camera work is crazy and it definitely wasn't a feel good movie - but I loved it.

Well, the shake sounds great anyway. The NA stuff sounds pretty scary, though.

We used to play spades all the time in college. You're right, a lot of people take that shit very seriously. In fact my dorm even had a spades tournament. The team that one cheated and everybody knew they were cheating but the dorm president wouldn't do anything about it. I'm not still bitter about it though. ;-)

I love Cloverfield also. But it made my sister motion sick. I don't know how to play spades. My friends and I are big cribbage players though.

The stories of those girls lives remind me of when I was in group therapy for addiction.
The severity of other peoples' problems reminds those of us who've had it easier to be thankful.
It could easily have been you or I driving in a blackout when somebody ran out in front... I can't imagine the self loathing that would follow.

So glad to hear about the new guy, in particular that he's not the other guy from last week. Can't wait to hear more about him.

I like reading you are taking care of yourself.
