Try again

Okay, let me try this again...

I went into work Friday night to pick up a shift. Actually, I went in at ten a.m. and put my name on the list. I came back around 4 p.m. and there was 6 of us trying to pick up a shift, but my name was first on the list, so I won! In fact, I think all six of us picked up. Partly because they opened the patio and they didn't staff it. So, it was good!

Anyway, I was really upset when I saw the new schedule, they only gave me one day next week and one on call shift. The reason is because the sales report came out and I was in the bottom 25 percent. If you are in the bottom 25 percent, you get crappy shifts and you aren't allowed to trade with anyone or pick up. However, I've been picking up all weekend and nobody said anything so I'm happy.

I was soooooo upset when I saw the sales report. I think I was in the bottom because I work all lunch shifts. Do you know how hard it is to sell a steak or fajitas at lunch? Those are dinner dishes. The people that work dinners have it so much easier. When I worked Friday night I sold alcohol to every single table. When I work at lunch, people order ice tea and water. I understand, it is lunch after all. But, the managers need to take that into consideration.

They let a bunch of people go on Friday and I was so scared that I was going to be one of them, especially when I saw the sales report. Somehow, they decided to keep me. THANK GOD! I seriously think I might be suicidal if I lose one more job. I'm working my ass off at the Hard Rock. I love the company and the job.

The only complaint I have is the Europeans. Sorry if I offend anyone, but do you guys really think that a $7 dollar tip on an $80 check is good? It's so funny, because they tell me how great the service is, and they look so proud when they tell me to keep the change, and then I open the book and it's less than a 10 percent tip. BULLSHIT! It's so annoying.

I have to tip out the bussers, food runners, and the bar on my SALES. Not on my tips, on my sales. So, I actually have to dig into my pocket to pay these people if my tables don't tip me.

UGH! Anyway, I had lunch with two friends that I used to work with at the Department of Defense 15 years ago on Friday. It was awesome. They looked great and they said I look the SAME. I loved to hear that.

Now, I'm publishing before I lose everything. Go Ravens! They rocked it today!

I didn't know that you had to pay the hostess, busser, etc., based on your sales! That's unfair when your tips are often based on how they do their job. It's good to see someone who likes their job and WANTS to work! Seem like many folks are so busy trying not to work... :-)

I just came from Germany yesterday. They really don't tip there. It's just their custom. So if they go above 5%, they are really trying to do the right thing. I know it doesn't help to pay the bills, but may help you to understand.

Also, you boss appreciates compliments, too. Go tell them thank you for keeping you on and let them know that thet were really smart to take into account how different shift make different amounts. They will appreciate the kind words (works in your favor) and will start taking shifts into account (works in your favor).

Good Luck.

Sorry about the shift next week. That blows. As you probably know my bother and I (and 5 other people) own a bar/restaurant. The bar has regular customer who pay sits at the bar all day with his girlfriend, runs a $75 tab and never tips more than $5. Outrageous. I don't get people who can't tip correctly.

ugh..7 on an 80 tab is NOT a good tip. Hope the tips (and shifts) pick up.

I know it sucks such small tips. But unfortunately tipping in Europe is much much different than here. It is less the norm or expected that it is here.

Hopefully you will get many less Europeans and pick up the easily influenced Americans to get your sales going. :)

I agree about the lunch and dinner crowds being two different target audiences. Unsweetened Ice Tea is usually what I always have when I eat out at lunch. On the other hand, if the place offers a lunch portion of the fajitas, I guarantee I am getting that every time.

The Ravens did play a great game on Sunday. It's funny, we kept calling the little guy from the Chargers, Waymon... I think his name was Sproils or something...

I hope that the Hard Rock works out for you. Hang in there, Hon!

Sorry about the Germans...hell, I'm German and I tip far over the 15% always...so hopefully you'll get more folks like me in there soon...oh, and congrats on surviving the cut!

I don't think we do it on purpose but it's difficult to get into the habit of tipping when we basically don't do it here.

Yes we tip for good service, the amount depends where you go and how classy the place is but I'd say on average 10% is fine.

The whole waitress thing needs sorting out in the States, maybe they should pay better wages from the start so tips aren't relied on?

wow - I had no idea that waiting tables included such a push on sales. amazing. they really can't hold you responsible for less alcohol and dinner sales at lunch, they have to have a pro rated amount in those cases. I'm glad they kept you and hopefully things will pick up. Since you are working out well and seem eager to actually work that probably amounts to more in their eyes than sales. Hope it picks up for you. I think Vegas gets busy this time of year as it cools down doesn't it?

When i tip, i take my 15-20% over the amount ex tax. Is that the normal thing to do?
