Yikes

oh wow - I lived in Delray Beach for 3 years before I moved out here to Vegas. I don't remember anything like this ever happening there. Sure, this is everyday news for Vegas, but when I saw the Delray Beach headline I almost fell out of my chair...

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Several different agencies are working tirelessly to find out the identities of two children found in a Delray Beach canal on. Divers were back in the water Thursday morning.

A passerby spotted something strange bobbing in the water Wednesday morning and alerted police to the C-15 canal that stretches between US 441 and the Intracoastal Waterway.

The body of a girl, who appeared to be between 6 and 10 years old, was found in a duffel bag around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The girl was dressed in short sleeves, dark pants, and blue polo sneakers. Her hair was arranged in beaded braids.

Police were doing a routine search for evidence, when they found the second child, stuffed in a suitcase around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He appeared to be between 10 and 12 years old. The boy was dressed in dark blue or black pants with no shirt.

"It's beyond what we can really fathom. I don't know who would hurt a child," said Delray Beach Police spokesperson Nicole Guerriero.

The canal in which the children were found runs 8 miles from west to east and it passes several major thoroughfares, like 441, I-95, Federal Highway.

Houses line the canal and neighbors were stunned.

"I dunno how anyone could take an innocent child and torture, murder them or anything. Just dump them to be eaten by gators," said one.

"I mean I have children, a daughter, you're suppose to take care of your children," said another.

Many people who use the canal did not notice anything unusual over the weekend, leading them to believe the bodies were dumped within the past 48 hours.

Police are asking anyone who has not seen their grandchild, a niece, or nephew to call them.

There's no word yet on how the children died or how long they were in the water for.

Police are investigating the deaths as homicides and believe the killings are related.

Of course, this is the crazy story I was actually searching for...

SAN DIEGO - 72-year-old Frank Rose, who suffers from neuropathy, said he awoke Thursday morning to find some of his toes missing, and he believes his two small dogs did it.

His long time partner, George Chilson, called 911 to report the incident.

When San Diego police responded they found blood on one of the dog's faces, some of the victim's toes missing, and a substantial amount of blood nearby.

The dogs, "Victoria" and "Elizabeth," are 1-year-old and 2-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Rose didn't realize the dogs had chewed off his toes because he has no feeling in his foot.

Rose has already lost one foot to his nerve condition and Chilson said the other one was heading down the same path.

He said Rose is at Scripps Mercy Hospital doing just fine, but will need surgery on Friday.

"He's sitting in bed, laughing and joking with the nurses and doctors."

Chilson wanted to make sure people understood that this wasn't a vicious attack, and he believes the dogs were actually trying to help Rose.

"I've noticed if I've cut my leg and have a scab, they'll lick it to heal it," Chilson said.

"I'm shocked. It's hard to believe," said Stephen Taylor, when told the grim news his neighbor had his toes bitten off by his dogs.

Another neighbor called the animals "sweet little dogs" and said his granddaughters often played with the two dogs.

"Those dogs are cuter then all-get-out," said Taylor. "I know they had the one and then they got another one because they loved them. That's just incredible."

Investigators filed a bite report and Animal Control has taken over the investigation.

"The owner woke up and his toes were gone," said Lt. Dan DeSousa with the County Department of Animal Services. "He doesn't know why it happened and the dogs aren't talking."

DeSousa said in his 22 years with the department, he has never seen anything like this.

The breed is known as happy and lovable and often serves as lap dogs. "So, for something like this to happen is very unusual," he said.

"This was a freak accident and I think that's just the way it's going to be handled," said DeSousa.

They have been secured and will be quarantined in the home for 10 days.

Yeah, the kids mother was killed. Then it seems the kids were dumped in the canal. Its the new way to end a relationship. Or perhaps its a very old way of ending a relationship.

As to the toes, the dogs were indeed chewing off dead and dying tissue to aid their owner. Diabetics often have impaired circulation and the toes die from the inside out. Dogs have an elevated sense of smell.

My dad's "winter home" is in Boynton Beach - right near Delray. I love that area.

Both of those stories are freakin insane - especially those dogs!

The dogs should be rewarded. They did the right thing for him. Its nature's way.

The family tree situation is being sorted out still but its the age old "I don't want no other woman's kids around here" story.
